What is Lice Infestation ?
Head lice or pediculosis is a condition that commonly infects the hair mainly of school children. Lice are small insects that live on people's heads and need to feed on human blood to survive.
Transmission
It is spread through close person-to-person contact, this is due to children putting their heads together while playing. Sometimes also by exchanging hats, hairbrushes or contact with the bedding of a person who has lice.

Prevention
The spread of head lice can be prevented by taking the following measures:
- Check children's hair frequently for the presence of head lice
- Prevent children from sharing combs or hats
- Long hair should be tied back
- Wash the combing brushes with hot water
- Wash children's clothes at temperatures above 50ºC
- Use fine-tipped combs for easy nit removal
Signs and Symptoms
The most common symptoms of lice infestation are:
- Constant itching caused by allergic reaction to lice bites
- Difficulty sleeping due to head itching
- Sores on the head from frequent scratching, these sores can become infected
- Tingling sensation in the head due to the presence of lice.
Treatments
The treatment is divided in:
Topical pediculicides, such as Permethrin cream and Oral Ivermectin
