Scabies
What is Scabies?
It is a skin mite infection that causes pruritic lesions with erythematous papules on the wrist, waist, genitals, and interdigital spaces. This condition is transmitted from person to person by physical contact. Scabies outbreaks are most common in daycare centers, nursing homes, and homes. The mites burrow under the skin and deposit their eggs.
Prevention
Scabies can be prevented by:
- Avoiding contact with people who have the disease.
- Not using objects belonging to a person infected with the scabies mite.
- Not sharing personal items such as towels, and bed linens with people diagnosed with scabies.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of Scabies are:
- Itching especially more severe at night
- Skin ulcers from scratching
- Swelling
- Skin rashes often appear in the armpits, breasts, buttocks, and between the fingers and toes.
Treatments
Medication for scabies includes:
Topical anti-mite cream: Permethrin
Oral anti-mite medication: Ivermectin
