About this Medication
Tadalafil for ED is a prescription treatment that supports the physical response needed for an erection. This PDE5 inhibitor is also FDA-approved to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It may be prescribed for use as needed or on a daily schedule, depending on the condition and the provider's instructions.
24hrdoc offers online ED treatment for eligible adults. Our sexual health service generally focuses on men ages 40 through 70, and every patient must be at least 18. A licensed provider reviews each request, and adults outside the usual service range may be directed to another care setting. A prescription is never guaranteed.
What is tadalafil?
Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis and is available as a generic equivalent, often called generic Cialis. It is a prescription medication used mainly for erectile dysfunction. Daily tadalafil is also approved for BPH symptoms and for men who have both ED and BPH.
The two ED schedules serve different needs. An as-needed dose is taken before anticipated sexual activity, while a lower-dose daily regimen maintains steady medication levels. An online doctor or other healthcare provider can determine the appropriate schedule after reviewing the patient's health and current medicines.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction is recurring difficulty getting an erection or being unable to maintain an erection firm enough for sex. Occasional difficulty is common and does not always mean a person has ED. Persistent ED symptoms deserve medical attention because they can affect a man's sex life and may point to another health problem.
ED may involve physical factors that affect blood vessels or nerve function. Diabetes and heart disease can contribute, and some medications may interfere with the erectile response. Stress or performance anxiety can also cause or worsen symptoms. ED becomes more common with age, but it is not an unavoidable part of aging.
Several treatments for ED are available, and an erectile dysfunction medication is only one option. Smoking can damage circulation and contribute to ED. Patients who smoke can also consider smoking cessation treatment as part of a broader men's sexual health plan.
How Tadalafil Works
During sexual stimulation, the body sends signals to relax smooth muscles in the penis. Tadalafil limits the action of the PDE5 enzyme, allowing those signals to last longer. This can improve blood flow and make it easier to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual intercourse.
Tadalafil does not automatically produce an erection or increase libido. It requires arousal to work, does not cure the cause of ED, and offers no protection from sexually transmitted infections.
Why Tadalafil Is Different
ED meds vary in how long they support the erectile response. Sildenafil usually has a shorter window of about 4 to 6 hours. Tadalafil can remain effective for up to 36 hours after an as-needed dose. The longer window may allow more spontaneity, but it does not cause a continuous erection or guarantee successful sexual performance.
Tadalafil also has a daily-use option, which can reduce the need to time each dose around planned activity. Some men prefer a shorter-acting option. Learn more about a sildenafil prescription. Neither medication is best for everyone, and a provider considers response, side effects, and health history before recommending an ED treatment.
Tadalafil for BPH
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes more common with age. BPH can cause a weak or interrupted urine stream, difficulty starting urination, and a frequent or urgent need to urinate.
Daily tadalafil can reduce BPH-related urinary symptoms and may make urination easier for some men. It does not shrink the prostate. A 5 mg once-daily regimen is FDA-approved to treat BPH and to treat ED and BPH at the same time, subject to individual prescribing considerations.
Urinary symptoms need a proper assessment because other conditions, including prostate cancer, can cause similar symptoms. A sudden inability to urinate, blood in the urine, or urinary symptoms with fever requires prompt in-person care
